Celestial Style Guide - Gan's Planet Formation

So this past week we finally finished the first pass Animation for Celestial. As one of the Animation leads, it was my job to help develop the style of how Gan moved. Specifically how his wings move and how he forms planets. As you might remember from this post I had the idea to combine aspects of Tai Chi to come up with how Gan would create a planet. Below is the animation from the style guide illustrating that. I'm pretty proud with how this turned out considering this was my first time animating wings.

And just for fun, I thought it would be cool to include the reference video I shot for this animation. As you can tell I slowed the animation down a lot, but the movements are the same.

As always enjoy!

From Concept to Creation

So as a result of working on Celestial, I have gotten really good at painting planets. Because we are now entering the final stages of production, our texture lead Ward Silverman (check out his site here) has been pumping out some planets with some KILLER textures. Because our film is so planet heavy, today I gave Ward a concept painting I did of a lava planet. I have to say it is really awesome seeing something you painted come to life right before your eyes. Rather than talk about how awesome of a job Ward did, I decided to use this blogpost to show you! I'm currently working on a visual development reel, so this is one of the pieces I will include.

This is the original concept painting I did.

And this is the finished render of Ward's planet

As you can see Ward did a killer job!

Thanks for stopping by and make sure you check out Ward's site!

Enjoy!

Presenting Gan!

So for those of you who have been following my blog for a while, you've seen some test animations and concepts of our main character Gan. Well the other day our rigger McKenna sent me the newest version of our rig to test out his wings. Now while the geometry isn't final, the wings are, so I decided to go ahead and pose him and his wings to get a better idea of how he might look. I have to say I'm pretty damn proud of the result. I'll let you decide what you think.

As always enjoy!

Boo, You Whore!

So anyone who knows me that I LOVE Monsters Inc. It's one of my all time films and it is also the inspiration for my newest piece. I was talking to some friends the other day about how whenever someone says "Boo" I say "you whore" in my head. For those of you who don't get the reference, that's from the film Mean Girls. Anyways I thought it would be absolutely hilarious to mashup the two films into one piece.

Disclaimer: This piece was done as a fun mashup, as stated before Monsters Inc is one of my favorite films, so I hope I didn't offend anyone with my portrayal of Boo. Also I do not condone "slut shaming" whatsoever.

Here's the initial sketch!

And here's the final piece!

As always thanks for checking out my blog and enjoy!
