Freelance Fun - Light Flight II

In my last blog post I talked about a packaging design I did for a magic trick my good friend Jeff Prace came up with. Jeff recently asked me to do a 3D rendering of the packaging along with a render of a Bic lighter. Now anyone who knows me knows that modeling is NOT my strong suit, so I knew immediately that there was one guy who could help me out. As I've mentioned before, James Bridges is a beast when it comes to modeling and quickly obliged with this amazing lighter model! All that was left was to apply some shaders to make it look real, light the scene, and do a little bit of compositing. Once that was all done, we were left with this, the finished product!

Freelance Fun - Light Flight!

As many of you know, in addition to being an artist, I'm also a Magician! I'm really lucky to be friends with Jeff Prace, one of the smartest magicians I've ever met! Recently Jeff came up with a great magic trick where the logo from a borrowed Bic Lighter appears on his own lighter. Jeff asked me to help him come up with some packaging for this trick so he could give it out at a lecture he had in August.

Previously Jeff had me paint a concept art piece for him for a trick he's working on and he wanted another hand painted image for the packaging. I thought it might be interesting to see the evolution of the packaging from start to finish.

As you can see it went through several iterations before we arrived at the one Jeff liked the best! Sometimes it was as simple as changing a font, other times it was just moving something over a few pixels.

Freenlance Fun! Logo Design

I know I know, it's almost the end of the month and I haven't posted a single blog post! I'm sorry! I've been super busy this past month. I've been lucky that I've been doing a lot of freelance work since I graduated, so that's taking up a large chunk of time. Speaking of freelance, I wanted to share a logo design I recently did for my friend Christen! Christen is an awesome magician, and also one of the judges of Sy-Fy's Wizard Wars, and she was looking for someone to design a logo for her new Webshow "Bitchkraft"! She wanted, and I quote, "a my little pony-esque unicorn with a rainbow coming out of its butt." Well after coming up with a quick sketch, here is the final design!

Minimalist Firefly Poster

So recently I finally watched both Firefly and Serenity. I know, I know, what took me so long? Honestly I just never got around to watching it. Well now that I've finished the show and watched the movie, I thought it was fitting that I make another Minimalist poster. One thing that fascinated me about Firefly was the Serenity itself. The reason being that with most Sci-Fi ships, they have some sort of weapons system, yet the Serenity had no weapons whatsoever. Because of this I knew that my first Firefly poster would have to feature this unique ship. The second thing I decided I wanted to feature was the use of the Chinese culture in the series, which is why I went with the Chinese characters for Serenity in the center of the piece.

By now it should be obvious to anyone that I'm a huge fan of minimalist posters and I feel that every poster I make I improve my skills as an artist. I plan on making at least one or two more Firefly posters in the near future. Leave a comment below if you have a guess as to what or who they may be about!

Freelance Fun!

I'm not sure how common this is at other Universities, but my school has this craigslist thing that someone created on facebook. Its a group of about 7,000 members, who sell anything from Beats by Dre to Blacktip Sharks (no I'm serious, check this out!). Every now and then I check out the page to see if there is anything I might want, when I happened to find someone looking for some freelance design work. I got in contact with her and found out that she wanted a logo for the organization she was part of, called I Am That Girl. After chatting about what she wanted, we finally settled on a Facebook banner design instead of a logo. She wanted something girly, preppy, and similar to something you'd see in a sorority. Obviously as a 22 year old guy this was my area of expertise. Initially I went with something that felt more "Greek" but we finally settled on this design, which is much more preppy.

On the same facebook post where the client was asking for logos, I found someone else who wanted a logo made for her club. After getting in contact with her, I found out that her club was the DIY club, and they wanted both a logo and an icon. With this logo, I had a clear idea in mind and immediately went to work. I wanted to make up the letters DIY out of objects you would use for a DIY project. The client really liked that and the only thing she had me change were some of the tools, as she felt that it was a bit too masculine. The last thing she had me do was make up an icon for the club as well, that they could use on posters, banners, etc. In this case, the client had a clear design in mind, and provided me with the background image to use, and the font. These are what we came up with
